How can I sound more natural and conversational when recording audio over my slide decks if I'm reading from a script?
This is something that gets better with practice. I definitely didn’t sound super natural the first few times I used a script, but the more I recorded, the more comfortable and conversational I became.
Here are a few tips that really helped me:
- Read your script out loud a few times before recording. This helps you catch any awkward phrasing and get more comfortable with the flow.
- Mark up your script. I like to highlight or bold words where I want to add emphasis, and I add extra line breaks where I want to pause. That small adjustment can really shift your tone.
- Smile while you record. I know it sounds funny, but smiling brings more energy and warmth to your voice. It can help you sound like you’re chatting with a friend rather than reading.
- Try standing up. I often record standing because it helps me feel more present and energized, which comes through in your voice.
- Imagine you’re teaching one person. Instead of feeling like you’re “presenting,” picture one student and speak directly to them. That shift helps you sound more real and connected.
And don’t forget: being rested and hydrated makes a difference too. But more importantly, remember your students are here for the value of what you're teaching. A stumble or two won’t hurt your credibility. Just focus on helping them and keep going. You’ll find your rhythm with each lesson you record.
